SRS – Bake, Run, Live – Patriotic Crunch

patriotic crunch 2This month for the Surprise Recipe Swap I was paired with Heather from Bake, Run, Live. She and I are kindred spirits. See she loves to bake and has since she was little – I used to bake with my Grandma and think I like to bake. Heather is into road races…me too! She’s completed the Disney full (me too!) and 7 half marathons. So I’ve done 17 but also have 2 extra years half-ing on her. And we both use running as an excuse to eat chocolate. I mean I don’t really need an excuse but running certainly makes it easier to justify!

As I peruse her awesome list of cookies, brownies, ice cream and breads, I realize how boring my desserts are usually. So do I pick a killer recipe with awesome ingredients that takes hours to make? No…Partially because my “furnished” kitchen sucks (I had to bring my own hand mixer up!) and partially because while I like to eat beautiful desserts I’d rather just make some slice and bake and be done with it. My inner baking diva was just not feeling it.

Good news though! Heather has recipes that are perfect for people like me who want something fabulous with very little work. I took Heather’s Leprechaun Crunch and adapted it for the 4th of July! Instead of mint cookies I used Oreo, for the green M&Ms, red and blue. Same goes for the sprinkles. And voila a snack perfect for a picnic!

Patriotic Crunch (adapted from Leprechaun Crunch)

3 – 4 handfuls of pretzels, broken

15 chocolate sandwich cookies like oreos, cut in 4 – 6 pieces

Handful of red and blue M&Ms

1/2 lb. dark chocolate

2 oz. white chocolate

Red, White and Blue sprinkles

1. Line cookie sheet with wax paper or spray with non stick. (Forgot this step…assists in the breaking at the end!)

2. Spread pretzels and chocolate cookies in a single layer.patriotic crunch cookies Sprinkle half the M&Ms on top.patriotic M&Ms

3. Melt chocolate by microwaving in a Ziploc bag for 30-45 seconds or until melted. Clip the corner and drizzle chocolate over the pretzel/cookie mixture. Stir until mostly coated.patriotic crunch m&M

4. Sprinkle remaining M&Ms on top and prepare white chocolate like the dark. Drizzle and top with sprinkles.patriotic crunch white chocolate

5. Wait for at least 5 minutes for the chocolate to harden. (Forgot this one too!)

6. Break into smaller pieces and enjoy!patriotic crunch 4

I felt bad that I received a baking blog this month and made something that required no baking SO I made another recipe…brown sugar shortbread!

I LOVE how you changed this up with the red, white, and blue colors! Perfect for the 4th of July! I will say that I happen to love these colors, as my birthday is Flag’s Day (June 14th)…so I’m just going to pretend that you made this as a late birthday present, ok? :)

I dropped some off in Austin this weekend and Mr. RWB said I can’t make this again…it’s too good!

These look perfect for the fourth! (What are the bunches of red, white, and blue string thingies you have standing up?)

Those are actually the summer Twizzlers! The only thing besides sprinkles I could find in red, white and blue this year! Thought it looked like fireworks…maybe I’ll put them on a stick next!
